It happens all the time – a phone call from your mom, the need to look up directions to lunch, or changing the song on your iTunes app… all while at the wheel. You may think you’ve mastered the art of multitasking, but it’s still distracted driving… and it’s still dangerous. According to The United States Department of Transportation, distracted driving claimed 3,477 lives in 2015 alone.
There are three main types of distraction that you need to be aware of:
- Visual: taking your eyes off the road
- Manual: taking your hands off the wheel
- Cognitive: taking your mind off of driving
Though, many states are enacting law to prevent mobile device use while at the wheel, such as banning texting or talking on the phone while driving, there’s much you can do to bring awareness to the issue both at home and in the workplace.
The National Safety Council observes April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month to draw attention to this issue and to empower you to put safety first and just drive, keeping you and your employees safe. This month is a great reminder that though technology allows us to make phone calls, dictate texts or emails, update social media, and more, all of these actions while driving are proven to increase crash risk. At their website, you can find webinars, case studies, infographics, statistics, and more to help raise awareness for yourself, your family, and your employees.
